Keeping a diary will help you design a sensible eating plan. It will highlight when you slip up - for example, there may be times that you didn't realise you were snacking so it will help you prepare healthier alternatives in advance, instead of easily reaching for a chocolate bar in the heat of the moment. It will also help you compare your meals and swap them for healthy alternatives.
